Sundin getting back in shape; sees Vancouver play
While Mats Sundin hasn’t started skating yet, he did take time to watch a potential suitor in action on Thursday night. The unrestricted free agent center was in attendance at the Staples Center to watch the Vancouver Canucks shut out the Los Angeles Kings 4-0.
Sundin, who watched the game from a luxury suite with his agent JP Barry, was also joined by Canucks general manager Mike Gillis. He has a two-year, $20 million offer on the table from the Canucks but Gillis prefer not to put any pressure on the former Leafs’ captain.
”I’ve been through this on the other side and I haven’t seen one situation where teams have put tremendous pressure on an elite player where that has worked out for them,” Gillis told Team 1040 Radio in Vancouver. ”I think when you get to the status of being considered one of the elite players in the league for a long time, you’re entitled to make sure you want to keep playing this game at the highest level before you make a decision.”
Gillis added that the little time he spent with Sundin and Barry was more focused on discussing the agent’s clients, namely Canucks defenceman Mattias Ohlund and forwards Henrik and Daniel Sedin.
Speculation over Sundin’s status picked up again last week with news that he was heading to California to get back in shape.
