Ryan Miller went back to work Wednesday, and his return to game action doesn’t appear far away, either. After practicing for the first time since sustaining a concussion Nov. 12, Miller, one of eight regulars out of the Buffalo Sabres lineup, didn’t give a definitive timetable for his comeback. When the Montreal Canadiens take the ice against the Anaheim Ducks Wednesday night, there may be a fella in the lineup who hasn’t been there for more than year.
Defenseman Andrei Markov slammed into Carolina Hurricanes center Eric Staal in early November of 2010, re-injured his right knee, and then had surgery on it on Dec. 8, the Montreal Gazette reports. Now he has traveled with the team to California and might be in the lineup Wednesday night, the paper notes.
“I don’t know if Wednesday will be the day,” head coach Jacques Martin said, according to the Gazette, “but we’re getting closer.”
Markov rejoined his teammates at practices last week. “We’re able to have some good, intense practices this week,” Martin said, the Gazette reports. “Markov can get into some grunt work — competing in 1-on-1s, 2-on-2s. We’re going in the right direction.”

Philadelphia Flyers veteran defenseman Chris Pronger has missed the last four games with a virus and now he’s going under the knife Tuesday to “clear out some loose particles” in his left knee, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. That’ll put him out of the lineup for four weeks.
That timetable has the 37-year-old Pronger returning to the team just before the Winter Classic takes place at Citizens Bank Park.
“This has been an issue for the last month or so,” GM Paul Holmgren said, according to the paper. “We thought that through his rehabilitation on a daily basis that he would start to feel better. He had another MRI on his knee and we felt that it would be better to get it taken care of now.”
The Daily News notes that the Flyers are already missing defenseman Andreas Lilja for six weeks with a high ankle sprain and that he and Pronger “will be moved to the long-term injured list” so their salaries are off the cap, which opens some room for a trade.
“There are a lot of things going on in here today,” Holmgren said, the paper notes.

Toronto Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer has been out since Oct. 22 with whiplash and concussion-like symptoms after a run-in with the Montreal Canadiens‘ Brian Gionta. He’s finally saying that he’ll be back in the lineup “soon,” according to the Toronto Star.
“The symptoms are getting better or almost gone,” Reimer said, according to the Star. “I think it’s just a matter now of getting back into shape. I’ve felt great the last five days. It’s been a lot of fun.”
Reimer, who was 4-0-1 with a .912 save percentage before getting hurt, spent almost two hours on the ice with goalie coach Francois Allaire on Tuesday as he tries to get back into game shape, the Star reports.
The Leafs have gone 12-8-2 this season without him.

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov played in seven games last season before suffering a major knee injury for the second year in a row. He went back under the knife of Dr. James Andrews in December and finally made it back onto the ice for a full practice with the team Monday, according to the Montreal Gazette.
“It gave everyone a lift when they saw him on the ice,” defenseman Josh Gorges said, according to the Gazette. “We don’t know when he’s going to be able to play again, but if you looked at him with some of the passes he was making, I don’t think it’s going to take him long to fit in.”
The 32-year-old Markov, a dual citizen of Canada and Russia, was selected in the sixth round of the NHL draft in 1998 by the Canadiens and entered the league in 2000. Since then, he’s scored 81 goals and notched 285 assists.

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller won a silver medal at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and took home the Vezina Trophy later that year. Now he’s out indefinitely after suffering a concussion Saturday night when Boston Bruins left wing Milan Lucic took him down during Boston’s 6-2 victory.
The Buffalo News reports that Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier “is adamant Lucic should be suspended for the hit.” Lucic will get his turn in the chair Monday at 1 p.m. to discuss the play with league officials, the paper notes.
However, Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet, who racked up 1,210 penalty minutes during his NHL career, tweeted Sunday that “reports indicate that Milan Lucic won’t face a suspension or fine for his controversial check on Ryan Miller.”
Regier would strongly disagree with that assessment: “If this hit and other types of hits like this are not suspended, we are opening up the possibility of losing goaltenders to injury. And not just injury, but concussion,” Regier said, according to the paper. “… When I look at the position of goaltending, in a lot of ways it’s not unlike quarterback in football. I feel very strongly the protection has to be provided and players committing these types of action should b

New Jersey Devils wing Ilya Kovalchuk has missed the last two games with a lower-body injury that is believed to be a strained groin, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
He skated a little bit before Thursday’s team practice and is not being ruled out of Friday’s game, the paper notes. “It’s day-to-day, and, unlike a broken bone — when there’s a definite timeline on it — it really is, we show up, see how it feels, and make a decision,” said coach Pete DeBoer, the Star-Ledger reports. “He’s feeling good about it, but we’re going to retain the right to daily make a decision on him. So that doesn’t mean he won’t play [Friday]; and it doesn’t mean that he will.”
Kovalchuk has notched two goals and seven assists in 11 games this season.

Toronto Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer hasn’t had a headache in a few days, which is a good sign since he was getting them irregularly after being clipped in the head by Montreal Canadiens forward Brian Gionta on Oct. 22, the last time he appeared in a game, according to TSN.
The word is that Reimer, who went 4-0-1 at season’s start with a 2.58 goals against average, is getting better and is expected to return to the ice soon, TSN reports.
Reimer’s agent, Ray Petkau, says that even though the team has treated Reimer as if he has a concussion, that diagnosis has not been made yet. “His baseline test was great, James passed it with flying colors,” Petkau said, according to TSN. “We are 100 percent confident the Leafs are handling this situation well and that includes James, his family and all involved.”
It remains to be seen what “soon” actually means, of course.

Nashville Predators center David Legwand is generally out on the ice for power plays and penalty kills, but he wasn’t there Wednesday when the team took on the Anaheim Ducks and he is likely going to be out when the team faces the Montreal Canadiens Saturday.
Legwand suffered “an upper-body injury after a hit from Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Brown” Tuesday, the Tennessean reports, and his disappearance from the lineup “could make life difficult for the Predators.”
The 31-year-old Legwand, who was the second overall pick of the 1998 draft behind Vincent Lecavalier, has scored five goals and notched nine assists this season. Legwand has played in more Predators games than any other player (782) and leads the team’s career scoring list with 174 goals and 288 assists.

The Ottawa Senators finished out a homestand Wednesday with a 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers. Now the team heads out on the road for the next nine of 10 games.
Along the way, the Sens will find one of their star players back in the lineup. Daniel Alfredsson has been out since suffering a concussion on Oct. 29. Wednesday, he skated with the team and will need to go through one or two full practices before being ready to appear in a game, according to the Ottawa Citizen. The paper notes that this puts Alfredsson in line to rejoin the lineup on Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 10 games, Alfredsson has scored four times and notched three assists this season.
“He looks good and it’s nice to see him back on the ice,” said teammate Jason Spezza, according to the Citizen. “It’s always a good sign when a guy comes back from a head injury and is able to skate for a couple of days in a row. But I’m sure he’s going to make sure he’s 100 percent before he comes back.”
