Coyotes win Tippett’s return to Dallas (AP)

Phoenix Coyotes coach Dave Tippett refused to gloat after his new team beat his old one. Shane Doan had a goal and two assists, Ilya Bryzgalov made 38 saves, and Phoenix stretched its winning streak to four games with a 4-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Sunday in Tippett's return to Texas. Tippett coached the Stars from 2002 until his firing last June.

When coach Terry Murray talks about his Los Angeles Kings these days, he doesn't hesitate using the word character. The Kings have it in abundance. Wayne Simmonds and Drew Doughty scored in the final 1:46 and the Kings matched their longest winning streak since 2002 with their sixth straight victory, 3-2 over the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.

Vokoun earns fourth shutout in January (AP)

The Florida Panthers congratulate goalie Tomas Vokoun(notes), of the Czech Republic, after he stopped 33 shots and recorded his seventh shutout of the year after an NHL hockey game Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, in Sunrise, Fla. The Panthers won 2-0.

Florida goalie Tomas Vokoun must be sorry to see January end. Vokoun stopped 33 shots to earn his seventh shutout this season and the Panthers beat the slumping New York Islanders 2-0 on Sunday. Jordan Leopold and Keith Ballard scored for the Panthers, who have won seven of 11. Vokoun had four shutouts in January, with his previous one coming Jan.

Caps win 10th straight, tie team record (AP)

It's a perfect 10 for the Washington Capitals, whose superstar woke up in a sleepy game to score the goal that kept the winning streak alive Sunday. Fittingly, it was Alex Ovechkin who found the net with 6:26 remaining in the Capitals' 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, giving Washington a franchise record-tying 10th consecutive victory.

Stars F Lehtinen activated off IR (AP)

Dallas Stars right wing Jere Lehtinen was activated off injured reserve for Sunday's game against the Phoenix Coyotes. Lehtinen, a member of Finland's Olympic team, missed the previous six games with a neck injury. The 36-year-old Lehtinen had three goals and eight assists in 32 games this season. Coyotes F Upshall out with torn ACL (AP)

While the Pittsburgh Penguins are unbeaten in shootouts this season, Evgeni Malkin usually skips them. He's tried skating fast and skating slow, shooting backhanders and forehanders and between the pads, all with little success. Maybe beating the much-disliked Detroit Red Wings with an excellent move will change the reigning NHL scoring champion's outlook about one-on-one competition.

Panthers’ Booth returns from concussion (AP)

Panthers left wing David Booth has returned from a concussion that had left him sidelined since October. Booth was included in Florida's lineup for the first time since suffering the concussion during a game against Philadelphia on Oct. 24. Iginla had two goals and two assists to help Calgary beat Edmonton 6-1 on Saturday night to end the Flames' losing streak at nine and extend the Oilers' skid to 13 games — one off the franchise record.
