The Vancouver Canucks put Mathieu Schneider(notes) on waivers this morning, according to the Vancouver Sun. The team only spent a little less than two weeks trying to trade the veteran defenseman but found no takers so now the Canucks are apparently hoping some other team will pick him and his one-year, $1.55 million salary up.
The 40-year-old signed the one-year deal at the start of the season to provide experience and skills for the back end of the Canucks’ defensive corps, but he missed the first 10 games of the season while recovering from shoulder surgery. He then didn’t play spectacularly in 17 games. Schneider left the team on Dec. 18 because he could obviously see he wasn’t going to get the playing time he wanted since he had been relegated to seventh-defenseman status. So the team has been trying to unload him since then.
"We’re trying to help him out," assistant general manager Lorne Henning said. "He still has that fire and wants to play. Some teams have shown interest in him but everyone has to fit their salary cap around him."
It is believe the Detroit Red Wings have interest in Schneider since three of its defensemen are out with injuries.
