Flyers activate C Briere from IR (AP)

The Philadelphia Flyers activated center Danny Briere from injured reserve Saturday, and expected to have him in the lineup Sunday in New Jersey after a 36-game absence because of groin injuries. The Flyers also recalled defenseman Nate Guenin from the Philadelphia Phantoms, and loaned right winger Claude Giroux and defenseman Lasse Kukkonen to the American Hockey League affiliate. Ducks win, extend Stars’ home skid to 4 (AP)

Anaheim kept its playoff hopes alive with a solid road trip. Dallas, on the other hand, has seen its drive toward the postseason take a hit during a disappointing run at home. Corey Perry scored the tying goal in the third period, Teemu Selanne added the winner 1:31 later and the Anaheim Ducks handed the Dallas Stars their fourth straight home loss, 4-3 on Saturday.

Wild F Boogaard suspended 5 games (AP)

Minnesota Wild forward Derek Boogaard was suspended five games without pay by the NHL on Saturday for elbowing Calgary’s Brandon Prust in the head. Prust was injured on the play in the third period of Friday night’s game and did not return to the game. Officials assessed Boogaard minor penalties for boarding and roughing. Caps beat Bruins on 80-foot shot in OT (AP)

Washington Capitals goalie Jose Theodore (60) blocks a shot by Boston Bruins' David Krejci (46) during second period of an  NHL hockey game, Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 in Boston. The Capitals won 4-3 over the Bruins.

Alexander Semin let loose an 80-foot slap shot and improved the Washington Capitals’ longshot chances of catching the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference. Semin scored from well outside the blue line on the first shot of overtime Saturday to give the Capitals a 4-3 victory over Boston and help them gain a point on the Bruins in the race for home ice in the East.

Brodeur wins again, Devils rout Panthers (AP)

With Marty Brodeur back in the lineup and the Devils fielding a healthy team for the first time since the start of the season, New Jersey is looking like a serious contender for the Stanley Cup again. Zach Parise had two goals and an assist and the Devils made life easy for Brodeur in his second game back from elbow surgery, routing the Florida Panthers 7-2 on Saturday afternoon.

Canucks keep Tampa winless in Vancouver (AP)

Steve Bernier has sent more grade-A scoring chances into the goalie’s pads and chest this season than he’d care to remember, so the Vancouver forward wasn’t complaining about a lucky goal Friday night. Bernier scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period on a deflection off an opponent’s skate, and the Canucks kept Tampa Bay winless in Vancouver with a 2-1 victory Friday night.

NHL points leader Evgeni Malkin scored on a power play at 1:36 of overtime to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night. Malkin ripped a one-timer from the right circle past rookie Antti Niemi after taking a pass from Sergei Gonchar. Malkin connected with 2 seconds left on a penalty to Chicago’s Kris Versteeg.

Osgood makes 30 saves, Wings top Kings (AP)

Chris Osgood’s mini midseason training camp produced results. The struggling goalie made 30 saves in his return to Detroit’s lineup after a four-game break, leading the Stanley Cup champion Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night. Osgood has a 3.22 goals-against average, which is 42nd in the NHL, and an .883 save percentage, which is 32nd.

Mathieu Schneider was able to do for Montreal on the final shot of the game what Philadelphia failed to achieve in eight tries. Score on the power play. Schneider scored with a man advantage at 3:21 of overtime to give the Montreal Canadiens a 4-3 victory over Philadelphia on Friday night. “I just tried to hang on and just get a wrister through with a screen,” Schneider said.
