A woman has been charged with impaired driving after she was seen driving a Zamboni erratically at the Kingsville Arena, hitting the boards and falling asleep slumped over the wheel.
At around 9:40 p.m. Thursday, an off-duty Kingsville OPP sergeant who happened to be at the arena was approached by a number of citizens telling him "I think the Zamboni driver is drunk."
The sergeant observed the 34-year-old driver operating the machine in an erratic manner, with speed fluctuating and missing large portions of the ice surface. On more than one occasion the Zamboni struck the boards and at one point the machine was stopped and the woman was slumped over the steering wheel. The sergeant contacted Kingsville OPP and requested assistance.
The woman managed to drive the Zamboni off the ice and she was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. During the arrest, the woman was not co-operating with the officers, who discovered she had a mickey of vodka.
She was released on a promise to appear in court in Windsor on Dec. 2 on charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle, driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol.

Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is listed as day-to-day after suffering what’s believed to be a sore hip in Thursday’s 4-1 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported it appeared Crosby was jabbed in the ribs at some point during the game.
"Honestly, I don’t even know what happened; I’d have to look at the tape," Crosby told reporters after the game. "I just had some discomfort. I just decided in the third period I couldn’t do much."
The 2007 Art Ross and Hart Trophy winner was held off the scoresheet and had one shot on goal through 15:56 of ice time. He left in the third period and did not return.
What happened to Crosby is unclear. Television replays showed Crosby skate to the Penguins bench, sit down with a grimace and try to collect himself.

While Mats Sundin hasn’t started skating yet, he did take time to watch a potential suitor in action on Thursday night. The unrestricted free agent center was in attendance at the Staples Center to watch the Vancouver Canucks shut out the Los Angeles Kings 4-0.
Sundin, who watched the game from a luxury suite with his agent JP Barry, was also joined by Canucks general manager Mike Gillis. He has a two-year, $20 million offer on the table from the Canucks but Gillis prefer not to put any pressure on the former Leafs’ captain.
”I’ve been through this on the other side and I haven’t seen one situation where teams have put tremendous pressure on an elite player where that has worked out for them,” Gillis told Team 1040 Radio in Vancouver. ”I think when you get to the status of being considered one of the elite players in the league for a long time, you’re entitled to make sure you want to keep playing this game at the highest level before you make a decision.”
Gillis added that the little time he spent with Sundin and Barry was more focused on discussing the agent’s clients, namely Canucks defenceman Mattias Ohlund and forwards Henrik and Daniel Sedin.
Speculation over Sundin’s status picked up again last week with news that he was heading to California to get back in shape.
