Stephane Veilleux scored his second goal of the game with 23.9 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Minnesota Wild a 3-2 preseason victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night. Veilleux tied the game with a power-play goal 3:30 into the third period. His high wrist shot beat goaltender Corey Crawford in overtime for the game-winner.

Canadiens defeat Red Wings in shootout (AP)

Max Pacioretty and Robert Lang scored in the shootout to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 preseason victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night. Pacioretty, who scored Montreal’s goal in regulation, deked Jimmy Howard and beat the Detroit goalie with a backhander. Lang also scored on a backhander on the Canadiens’ second attempt.

Kings acquire D O’Donnell from Ducks (AP)

The Los Angeles Kings acquired defenseman Sean O’Donnell from the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, receiving a conditional selection in the 2009 NHL draft in return. The 36-year-old O’Donnell played for the Kings from 1994-2000. Sabres’ Gaustad out 3-4 weeks with thumb injury

Buffalo Sabres forward Paul Gaustad had a torn ligament in his right thumb surgically repaired Tuesday. He is expected to be out a minimum of 3-4 weeks, Buffalo General Manager Darcy Regier said in a statement.

Regier also announced today that the Sabres have assigned 12 players to the Portland Pirates of the American League. In addition, forward Philip Gogulla has been loaned to Kolner Haie of the German Elite League. The moves leave the Sabres with 34 players remaining in camp.

Heading to Portland are: forwards Tyler Bouck (pending waivers), Jimmy Bonneau (pending waivers), Colton Fretter, Marc-Andre Gragnani, Derek Whitmore, Felix Schutz and Colin Murphy; defensemen Mike Card and Mike Kostka; and goaltender Jhonas Enroth. Forward Josh Vatri and defenseman Paul Baier will attend Portland’s camp on a tryout basis.

Jeff O’Neill has ended his NHL comeback bid with the Carolina Hurricanes. He notified the team of his decision after Sunday’s exhibition win over Philadelphia.
