Hunter lifts Isles over Thrashers in OT (AP)

Josef Vasicek and Trent Hunter turned an apparent disadvantage into the game-winning play for the New York Islanders. Atlanta won a faceoff early in overtime, but Vasicek stole the puck and set up Hunter’s winning goal as the Islanders recovered after blowing a three-goal lead to beat the slumping Thrashers 5-4 on Thursday night. The New York Rangers’ newfound attention to details in paying off with a string of wins. Brandon Dubinsky and Sean Avery scored first-period goals to lift the Rangers to a 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, New York’s third straight victory and sixth in eight games (6-0-2). “We really don’t have a choice right now,” said Henrik Lundqvist, who made 26 saves.

Pens’ Hossa hurt in 5-1 loss to Bruins (AP)

The Boston Bruins are moving up in the Eastern Conference standings by beating the teams on top of them. One game after shutting out the Ottawa Senators, Tim Thomas held Pittsburgh scoreless for 53 minutes, stopping 27 shots on Thursday night to lead the Bruins to a 5-1 victory over the Penguins and give Boston its fifth consecutive victory.

Jason Spezza raised his arms in triumph for his goal and celebrated a bit longer than Flyers goalie Martin Biron thought was necessary. So Biron shoved Spezza in the back, then the chest. Words were exchanged and the Ottawa center was tossed. The Flyers had their nasty streak back. The Senators simply had another loss for their new coach.

Red Wings activate D Kronwall from IR (AP)

The Red Wings activated defenseman Niklas Kronwall from the injured list on Thursday and assigned defenseman Kyle Quincey to Grand Rapids (AHL). Colorado not sure when Forsberg will play

After two days of red tape, Peter Forsberg will get the red carpet treatment from the Colorado Avalanche when he finally steps foot on Denver soil Friday the Denver Post reported.

A source close to Forsberg said he will arrive in Denver Friday night from Vancouver, British Columbia, after two days of getting paperwork completed for his P-1 work visa.

While that is good news to the Avs and their fans, it means Forsberg won’t be at the team’s practice this morning, and that makes him questionable at best for Saturday’s greatly awaited game against Los Angeles at 6 p.m. at the Pepsi Center.

Hossa sprains knee ligament in Pittsburgh debut

Marian Hossa, obtained by the Pittsburgh Penguins in a deadline dead is expected to miss a week after spraining the medial collateral ligament in his right knee in his debut with the team Thursday.

"It’s really disappointing," said Hossa, who was hurt in a collision with Boston right winger Glen Murray during a second-period power play. "When I dropped the puck to [defenseman Sergei Gonchar], there was a little hit, knee-on-knee. It was just an accident."

Hossa played on a line with Ryan Malone and Jordan Staal and said he felt comfortable there before being injured.

Red Wings starting to get healthy

Trade-deadline acquisition Brad Stuart will make his Detroit Red Wings debut Friday, and Niklas Kronwall is expected to be back in the lineup.

"Obviously, we’re turning the corner in the injury department," coach Mike Babcock said.

In fact, Babcock was delighted to see both Chris Chelios, out since last Friday with a chipped fibula, and Brian Rafalski (groin) on the ice for practice Thursday, though Rafalski, who hasn’t played since Feb. 12, didn’t participate in drills.
