Brind’Amour lifts ‘Canes to OT victory (AP)

Carolina captain Rod Brind’Amour scored with 1:40 left in overtime to give the Hurricanes a 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night. Scott Walker had a goal and an assist and Tim Gleason also scored for Carolina. Toronto captain Mats Sundin scored with 11.4 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Phil Kessel, Milan Lucic and Marc Savard scored early in the first period to send the Boston Bruins to a 4-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night. Kessel and Lucic scored 2:50 apart as Boston jumped out to a two-goal lead 3:18 in. Savard, who extended his assists and points streaks to nine games each on Kessel’s goal 28 seconds in, made it 3-0 with an unassisted goal at 8:21.

Ovechkin’s fourth goal lifts Caps in OT (AP)

Alex Ovechkin scored his fourth goal of the night with 1:26 left in overtime to give the Washington Capitals a 5-4 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night. Ovechkin finished with four goals and one assist for five points, but the last one was the biggest. He took a crossing pass from Jeff Schultz and beat Montreal goalie Cristobal Huet from in front for the overtime goal.

Brad Richards had a goal and two assists, leading the Tampa Bay Lightning past the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 on Thursday night. Lafleur turns himself over to police (AP)

Former hockey star Guy Lafleur turned himself over to Montreal police Thursday, a day after a warrant was drawn up for his arrest for giving contradictory evidence as a witness at his son’s bail hearing. Atlanta’s Kovalchuk out at least 2 games (AP)

Atlanta Thrashers star Ilya Kovalchuk will miss at least two games but apparently avoided serious injury to his right knee when he was hurt in Wednesday night’s game against Pittsburgh. Forsberg sets sights on NHL return (AP)

Peter Forsberg has decided not to play for his hometown team Modo this season, instead setting his sights on a return to the NHL. Forsberg made the announcement to Modo hours before the deadline for transfers in the Swedish hockey league. “My goal is to go back to the NHL,” Forsberg told Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet. Preds sign F Tootoo to 2-year extension (AP)

The Nashville Predators signed forward Jordin Tootoo, the first Inuit to play in the NHL, to a two-year contract extension. General Manager David Poile announced the deal worth $1.95 million Thursday, after the team’s morning skate.
