Brian Campbell gingerly stuck his skate onto the ice like a swimmer dipping his toe into a cold pool. The Buffalo Sabres defenseman led his teammates onto the makeshift hockey rink for practice Monday and was none the worse for wear. The anticipation and the trepidation seemed to be gone after the team’s hourlong spin. Read Original Post Here

Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas, left, makes a save on Atlanta Thrashers right wing Marian Hossa during the second period of their NHL hockey game in Boston on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007.

A friendly sibling rivalry turned out favorably for Mark Stuart and the Boston Bruins. Stuart’s goal broke a tie a period after brother Colin scored his first NHL goal for Atlanta, and the Bruins ended a six-game skid with a 5-2 victory over the Thrashers on Monday. “It was nice,” Mark Stuart said. “He one-upped me earlier so I had to do it.” Boston’s first goal of the game — a power-play score by…

If the Anaheim Ducks are going to defend their Stanley Cup championship, they might start by cutting down on the penalties. Daniel Sedin and Matt Cooke each scored, and the Vancouver Canucks took advantage of several opportunities presented by the NHL’s most penalized team in a 2-1 victory over the struggling Ducks on Sunday night.

Sabres G Miller preps for outdoor game (AP)

Playing outdoor hockey is becoming old hat for Ryan Miller. Maybe this time it’ll be “new tuque.” Pulling a page from the Jose Theodore playbook, the Buffalo Sabres goalie is considering wearing a tuque — a knitted ski cap — on top of his mask during the Winter Classic on Tuesday at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Modano had the lone goal in a shootout, and the Stars overcame three third-period goals by the Blues' Paul Kariya to win 5-4 on Saturday night.

Stars goalie Mike Smith wanted to make amends after allowing three goals to Paul Kariya in the third period and letting what looked like an easy win over St. Louis go to overtime. His sprawling save on Kariya in the shootout did just that, and when Mike Modano’s goal stood up as the only one, Smith and the Stars had their win, 5-4 over the Blues 5-4 Saturday night.
