Mueller, Vrbata get Coyotes by Avs in SO (AP)

Bergeron helps Islanders beat Hurricanes (AP)

Marc-Andre Bergeron has spent the season drifting in and out of the New York Islanders’ lineup. Maybe after his latest goal-scoring spree, he’ll stay there. Bergeron had two goals and an assist, and the Islanders scored three goals in a 3:39 stretch of their 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night.

Sharks extend road win streak to 10 (AP)

Talent and hard work have made the San Jose Sharks the NHL’s top road team. A little luck never hurt, either. Jonathan Cheechoo’s goal on a fortunate bounce was the game-winner and the Sharks made a mark in the NHL record book, winning 3-2 for their 10th consecutive road victory on Monday night. The goal came just 10 seconds after the Minnesota Wild had tied the score.

J.P. Dumont scored a second-period goal, rookie Dan Ellis stopped 22 shots for his third career shutout and the Nashville Predators ended a seven-game losing streak in Dallas with a 1-0 victory over the Stars on Monday night. Dumont provided the Predators with all the scoring they’d need at 16:42 of the second period, striking from in front of the net off a setup by Alexander Radulov.

Blues hand Wings first shutout of season (AP)

Manny Legace wanted to play much better than he did the last time he faced his former team. He did, making 31 saves for his 20th career shutout to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 2-0 win over the NHL-leading Detroit Red Wings on Monday night. It was the first time Detroit, winners of 14 of its last 16 games, was held scoreless this season.

Rick Nash broke out of scoring slump with three goals and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 on Monday night. Jiri Novotny had a goal, and Nikolai Zherdev added two assists for the Blue Jackets, who have won three straight at home. Edmonton’s Ethan Moreau had his first goal in his second game back from a shoulder injury suffered last October.

It was the first time Detroit, winners of 14 of its last 16 games, was held scoreless this season. Erik Johnson and Lee Stempniak scored for the Blues, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Joe Thornton and Milan Michalek each had a pair of assists and the San Jose Sharks made a mark in the NHL record book, beating the Minnesota Wild 3-2 for their 10th consecutive road win. Steve Bernier, Kyle McLaren and Jonathan Cheechoo scored for the Sharks, who last lost a road game on Nov. 9, and are now tied with four other teams for second on the NHL’s list for consecutive road wins.

Sabres, Pens practice for outdoor game (AP)

Pens G Conklin to start again outdoors (AP)

Ty Conklin is 2-for-2 when it comes to outdoor NHL games. The Pittsburgh Penguins goalie got the starting nod for Tuesday’s Winter Classic against the Buffalo Sabres, just as he did four years ago while with the Edmonton Oilers in the Heritage Classic.
