Rangers top Flyers in fight-filled game (AP)

New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist cannot stop a goal  by Philadelphia Flyers' Simon Gagne in the second period of their NHL preseason hockey game Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, in Philadelphia.

Rangers defenseman Marc Staal fired a shot in off the right post with 1:11 left in the third period to give New York a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night. The final preseason game for both teams had a rough edge to it as the clubs combined for 31 penalties and several fights. Brandon Dubinsky and Nigel Dawes also scored for the Rangers (3-2-1).

Dominik Hasek posted a 13-save shutout, and Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and two assists in the Detroit Red Wings’ 4-0 victory Saturday night over the Toronto Maple Leafs that wrapped up the preseason schedule for both teams. Johan Franzen, Dan Cleary, and Mikael Samuelsson also scored for Detroit (6-3).

Tim Connolly broke a third-period tie, and Derek Roy and Dmitri Kalinin had a goal and an assist each to lift the Buffalo Sabres to a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night in the preseason finale for both teams. Connolly scored the winner with just under 6 minutes left, knocking a rebound past goalie Marc-Andre Fleury after Fleury stopped Kalinin’s shot from the left circle.

Parise lifts Devils over Islanders 2-1 (AP)

Zach Parise had a goal and an assist on the power play to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 preseason victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday night. Dainius Zubrus scored the other goal for the Devils, who had a 20-save effort from Martin Brodeur. Wade Dubielewicz, the backup to Rick DiPietro, stopped 37 shots for the Islanders. Wild sign 2006 1st-round pick Sheppard (AP)

With a touch of an English accent, the NHL opened its season in unfamiliar territory Saturday — and the Kings ruled. The Los Angeles Kings got two power-play goals from Mike Cammalleri and one from Rob Blake in a 4-1 victory over the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks — the first time the NHL played a regular-season game in Europe.
