Modano sticks with Stars

Mike Modano(notes) has been playing for the Dallas Stars since 1989 when the team was still the Minnesota North Stars and he apparently isn’t planning to leave the organization anytime soon. He’s got a no-trade clause in his contract that he decided not to waive at the trading deadline even though three teams, including the league-leading Washington Capitals, asked to get him at the March 3 trading deadline, according to ESPN.

The Stars are pretty close to being out of the playoff race this season, playing seven points behind the Calgary Flames, which is currently at eighth place in the Western Conference standings. Things were a little tighter at the deadline. "We were right there in the playoff race, just a point out of eighth," Modano told ESPN. "It would have been tough to leave. It just would have been hard. I didn’t like the idea of leaving the city and going off to be a loaner for two months or so. There was no guarantee that if I left that the team that got me was going to win anyway."

GM Joe Nieuwendyk(notes) says he always let Modano know when any interest arises from another team, but Modano has always said no. "He elected to see this thing through," he told the site. "It’s important to be with one franchise to him and I respect that."

After watching his team rally for the third straight game with a six-goal third period, all San Jose coach Todd McLellan wanted to talk about was the listless play the first two periods that put the Sharks in the hole. “We were clearly outworked, outplayed, outhustled for two periods and that’s very disappointing,” McLellan said.
